The rules for writing Kwéyòl are few and can be mastered in a very short period of time. Of course, like everything else, practice makes perfect. Here is a simplified version of the basic rules and orthography. Kwéyòl is written as it sounds. There is only one way to write each sound, unlike English (choir, kitten, cup, quiet) There are no silent letters, unnecessary letters or double letters, except for double “n”, which happens with words that have the nasal an, en, or on. For example “vann” (to sell). Van + n Always break down words into syllables when attempting to write them. Many of the Kwéyòl consonants are pronounced exactly the same as English: b, d, f, g, h, k, l, m, n, p, *(r), s, t, v, w, y, z The letter "r" is not generally used, except in certain words borrowed from the English language. radyo, rekòd, strès. The letters Q and X are never used, and the letters C and U never appear alone. They always appear as part of the digraphs "ch" and "ou". |
